9 Categories to help you find a new MMORPG

You know you want to play a new MMORPG but you're not sure which of the hundred or so offerings is right for you. You can spend an hour reading through reviews and people's opinions for the new MMORPG you're eyeing on whether or not they feel it's a good game, or you can look for some objective measures. Generally, most people's demands can be summed up by some combination of nine specific categories. Those categories are price, art style, grinding, genre, uniqueness, usability, crafting, PvP options, and level of customization.

Price

Free MMORPGs have become quite numerous over the past few years, outnumbering their pay to play counterparts. That's not to say that free MMORPGs generated no revenue. It's not like some wealthy benefactors are backing all of these games for your enjoyment. Free to play MMOs pretty much all have item malls where players purchase anything from new content to play through to improved equipment for their characters. Subscription-based MMORPGs cost anywhere from $ 5 to $ 15 per month but provide the exact same game play experience to all players. Free MMORPG's are good for gamers that like to play multiple new MMORPGs, are too cheap or poor to pay for games, or want to spend money to gain an edge over other players. Make sure before playing a free MMO to check the game's item mall to see how fair game play is between paying and non-paying customers.

Art Style

Do you like bright, vibrant colors, cartoony graphics? Do you prefer as much realism as possible? How about 2D vs. 3D? There's not much to say as visuals are pretty self explanatory, but you may want to keep in mind that certain visual styles lean themselves more to certain game play types. An example is that isometric games are generally considered more tactical because the players have a greater field of view to play with.

Grinding

This is a simple term for referring to how easy it will be to advance in your new MMORPG. A game with a high level of grinding means that you are going to be performing several repetitive tasks to be able to get anywhere. A game with a low level of grinding usually means a lot of quests or an innovative advancement system like where(TSource) skills increase Eve Online in real time, whether the player is online or offline. Some people do prefer high level grinding games because the mindless play can be soothing and relaxing. Plus, attaining a high level becomes more of a right of passage and has some level of pride attached to it. Consider what type of grinder you are before jumping in!

Uniqueness

Is the game a completely unique experience or is it just better fit in one of the other eight categories? How much do you really care? Maybe you are happy with a generic MMO experience that just has a lot of crafting and customizing and if that's the case then this category doesn't matter. On the other hand, if you've played every new MMORPG out there then you may want something truly different for a change.

Usability

This is based on good tutorials, intuitive interfaces, and the ability for players to just pick up and play. This category really comes down to patience. If you are a patient person you can probably look past poor usability for good game play, but impatient gamers may not want to be hassled when they are trying to relax.

PvP Options

First off, Ppa refers to player vs. player which translates to how often you fight other humans. So whether you prefer primarily playing against other players or with other players this will be an important category. A game's availability of PvP types really determines how other players will be aggressive. On the low end of aggression are games with only for PvP duels or arenas. These are completely optional PvP minigames that may or may not give players any tangible benefits for participating. The lower level of PvP is Zone Based or Faction Warfare play. You are probably going to want to PvP to get the most of the game, but you don't have to be worried about death at every corner. Now if you want the potential for player combat at any time then Open PvP game-play is going to be right up your alley because as the name implies, players can fight almost anywhere in the game world. Generally less aggressive options also means better PvP PvE (player vs. environment) game play. Depending on what amount of fighting computer opponents vs. fighting human players you prefer, this is an important category to look at for any new MMORPG.

Crafting Depth

Crafting depth is more than finding resources, researching recipes, and making items. Good crafting depth results in a strong player based economy with lots of trading, buying, and selling between players. All new MMORPGs offer some kind of crafting, but really if all you're doing is making potions and upgrading your items from Sword of Slaying + 1 to Sword of Slaying + 2 that doesn't cut it. MMOs with a good crafting system creates interaction between the community and dependency on other players to achieve the strongest of characters.

Customization Choices

Last of these nine categories is the ability of players to differentiate themselves from other players. The first layer is the visual appearance which games accomplish at first through character creation with great games allowing nitty gritty details like eye placement and lips curls. After character creation good customization means either lots of unique items or the ability to change the appearance of those items through add ons or dyes. Many a new MMORPG offers these in spades but some not so much.

The second layer of customization is how you differentiate yourself on the battlefield. To achieve the highest level of customization to good MMORPG will offer you multiple paths to making your character different. One of the best of these games is the classic Ultima Online where there are no character levels and no predefined classes. Last Online allows players to advance in dozens of different skills to effectively create their own class. Games like World of Warcraft accomplish a small level of customization by giving players a limited number of talent points as they level to power up certain abilities. If you want to feel like an individual and not just another cog in the MMO wheel then make sure you get a highly customizable game.

A New MMORPG

Given these 9 categories you will find not only a new MMORPG to play, but one that you are more likely to enjoy. There are plenty of good games out there, but just because somebody else likes it doesn't mean it's going to be up your alley. You can read fairly objective viewpoints on all nine of these categories at one of the best MMORPG games sites. In addition, games are further sorted by these categories to get you playing faster.
